Hutton Short Mat Bowls Club
Monday, 08 November 2010 00:00

Members of Hutton Short Mat Bowls Club on the Freeweheelers bike with treasurer Richard ReevesEach year Hutton Short Mat Bowls Club holds a Charity Bowls event and this year the nominated charity was Freewheelers EVS.

The event was held on Sunday 12 September, with 16 teams (divided into 2 groups) with each team playing 4 games.    The winners of each group played in the final.  For the second year running the final was closely contested by Skewen, from South Wales and Winterbourne, with Skewen eventually winning 14 – 7.  This was the reverse of the result from last year.

The Charity event is well supported by the short mat bowling community and the event has already been booked for next year.

Prior to the charity event, three of the members of Hutton Short Mat Bowls Club,  Frank Paige, Mike Turnbull and Bryan Ennis did a charity climb of Ben Nevis with sponsorship going to the Freewheelers.  The climb took 4¼ hours to get to the top and 4 hours to come down.  Not a bad achievement considering their combined age is 203, between them they managed to raise in excess of £300 in sponsorship and in total the Club raised a total of £1,400.

Freewheelers and the club would like to thank all of the teams who took part, the Ladies of the Club for providing endless cups of tea, bacon butties and lunch for almost 70 people and anybody else who contributed in any way to the event.

Photographs of the handover event and the Ben Nevis climb can be seen in the Freewheelers gallery.
